Though pirate encounters are now a rarity at best, ‘twas not always the case. Indeed, the house built in 1653 that would become part of The Buccaneer was hidden from the sea to discourage bandits and brigands. Three-plus centuries, several reincarnations and many a renovation later, The Buccaneer is a St. Croix treasure with nary an angle that doesn’t greet the great blue. This family-owned nugget has managed to mix the glamour of its heritage with the sparkle of an award-winning modern resort. While resplendent today with guest-favorite features like the golf course, tennis courts or Hideaway Spa, historical detail remains: The Buccaneer has lovingly preserved one of its sugar mills and offers it as a special option for intimate dining. Take a repast at The Terrace restaurant overlooking the sea as the sugar-, cotton- or cattle-baron owners must have done, or snorkel and kayak at the resorts’ three beaches. And while the youngest members of your crew enjoy activities at the Kids Camp, sip from vintage rum cocktails at The Mermaid restaurant. They’re not quite as antique as the sugar mill, of course, but you really ought to try one (just for history’s sake).
