The Ancient Romans contributed a great deal to civilization (aqueducts, military tactics, Caesar salads), but their buildings simply can’t hold a candle to ours. Case in point: The Colonnade Hotel, in Boston’s Back Bay. Much like the Pantheon, The Colonnade features a column-like structure but, unlike the Pantheon, it’s in great shape. A $25 million renovation elevated the already-luxurious stylings, and each room is outfitted with fresh and fetching furnishings. The Colosseum may have hosted thrilling spectacles in its day, but little is more exciting than a plate full of Lobster Bouillabaisse at the hotel’s restaurant, Brasserie Jo. And while steam baths may have kept centurions hardy, our money’s on The Colonnade’s 1,000-square-foot fitness center for the better workout. Really, is it any wonder why Ancient Rome fell while The Colonnade’s stock just keeps going up?
