Flashbulbs may not announce your arrival, but you’re certain to feel like a star as you pass through the ornate lobby of The Jefferson Hotel. Built in 1895 during the luxer-than-luxe Gilded Age, this grandiose structure has played host to cultural icons including Sarah Bernhardt, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra—and still retains every bit of its glamour. Knowing Frank, dinner and drinks would have been of utmost importance, and today’s imaginative dishes and libations at the Lemaire restaurant don’t disappoint. Sarah Bernhardt would be certain to arrange a facial and make-up application in the salon, just to ensure she’d be as luminous as the hotel’s crystal chandeliers. No doubt, Mr. Fitzgerald would find inspiration in the eclectic, castle-like architecture and repair to his elegant guest room to write. (Tender is the Night, indeed.) And your own itinerary shouldn’t be without a stroll around historic Richmond. That is, of course, if you can tear yourself away from the glittering grandeur of The Jefferson.

Impressive details. TripAdvisor travelers were starstruck over the multitude of grand features like the lobby’s stained-glass dome, the grand staircase and the marble baths.
The Spellbinders:
- Handcrafted, convertible tiaras, available only here and at Monticello
- Original oil paintings, including 1893’s “The Soap Bubbles” by Elizabeth Gardner Bouguereau
- The buffet of chocolates at the Chocolate Lover’s tea
- The Energy Balancing treatment at the salon
- Juniper-scented free roaming loin of venison with wild huckleberries
- The indoor pool’s sun-filled skylights
Some Reminders:
- You’ll find complimentary coffee at the concierge desk in the morning; after all, the Vanderbilts would never have dreamed of making their own coffee
- The location isn’t as Richmond-central as some might like—but that’s easily solved with complimentary transportation to downtown destinations
